BELL’S GALÁPAGOS STORY

Island ecosystems are home to species found nowhere else, but their isolation leaves them highly vulnerable to invasive pests like rodents. Bell Laboratories is uniquely equipped to share our rodent control expertise with non-profit and government conservation partners to create specialized rodent control tools to protect these fragile habitats.

The Galápagos Islands are central to this effort. For 20 years, Bell has worked with partners eradicate invasive rodents from multiple islands — and the results speak for themselves. Galápagos tortoise populations have grown from just 3,060 in the wild to nearly 20,000 today. Seabirds are nesting again, native plants are thriving, and endangered species are being pulled back from the brink.

The Galápagos Islands, named a World Heritage Site in 1979, is the only tropical archipelago with over 95% of its biodiversity intact. Bell partners with Island Conservation and the Charles Darwin Foundation to protect these native species from extinction. Invasive rats, which arrived on the islands aboard ships in the late 17th century, have endangered many bird species, native plants, and even the giant Galápagos tortoises.

By developing and manufacturing specialized rodent control products, Bell works to rid the Galápagos Islands of these invaders and save the species that call them home – all while focusing the global spotlight on threatened wildlife populations.
