West Harlem has become the first neighborhood in New York City—and the first in North America, according to Mayor Eric Adams—to containerize 100 percent of its trash. The achievement follows the success of a pilot program in Hamilton Heights launched by District 7 City Council member and sanitation committee chair Shaun Abreu, CC ’14, in September 2023 in response to concerns of rat infestations.
